Job Title: Senior Analyst

Reports to (title): Laboratory Supervisor / Laboratory Manager

Department: Laboratory

Basic Purpose: What is the overall function of the job?

  • Results oriented to produce high quality defensible analytical data, safely and on time by following applicable Standard Operating Procedures.

  • Gains expertise in the area of work by intense training

  • To be the resource for Laboratory Technicians and Analysts for all laboratory procedures and complex analyses. Participates in building a strong team of analytical professionals.

  • Identifies and resolves analytical problems and suggests improvements in processes, staff and equipment resources

Key Accountability/Responsibilities: What specifically is this job expected to accomplish?

  • Reviews LIMS summary reports to prioritize daily workload, rushes and specialty analysis for self and junior staff

  • Performs more complex sample preparation and analyses, including method and/or data validation within holding time requirements

  • Ensures a high level of accuracy in sample preparation and analysis

  • Proactively orders supplies and maintains appropriate inventory levels

  • Assumes a lead role in the planning and implementation of any procedural or equipment validation

  • Ensures instruments and equipment are being maintained appropriately and assesses new instruments

  • Identify and document all known sample deviations, non-conformances, and/or process deviations and report to the Supervisor.

  • Provides input to corrective action procedures or may be assigned to perform the corrective action

  • Employs proper laboratory techniques to minimize risk of mislabeling, sample mix-up and cross contamination between samples and other materials

  • Provide Supervisor/Manager with updates on workstation status including advance notification of any delays

  • Evaluate and initiate problem solving in all areas of the laboratory

  • Develops Standard Operating Procedures and general work instructions

  • Identifies problems, provides feedback and recommends solutions (technical, procedural, quality, safety & human), to Supervisor

  • Coordinates laboratory projects

  • Assesses feasibility of Kaizen projects as needed

  • Suggests and helps to implement production efficiencies

  • Attends onsite client meetings and meetings with vendors as required

  • Acts as a positive change agent in supporting Bureau Veritas new initiatives (operational and cultural)

  • Supports and complies with all Bureau Veritas policies, Quality System and Health & Safety program

  • Participates, when requested in lab and Health & Safety meetings

  • Participates, when requested in internal and external audits

  • Provides technical expertise to staff through training and mentoring

  • Maintains training records and relevant qualifications

  • Keeps work area clean, neat and organized

  • All other responsibilities as assigned

Skills and Knowledge: What skills and knowledge are used to carry out job responsibilities and solve problems?

  • B.Sc.,technical diploma or equivalent experience

  • Demonstrated success in the role of Analyst 2

  • Sound knowledge of sample handling procedures to ensure continuity and integrity of samples through compliance with laboratory procedures and quality assurance protocols

  • Knowledge of, and experience with laboratory Occupational Health and Safety practices to handle hazardous materials by taking the necessary precautions

  • Up-to-date knowledge of laboratory processes and automation

  • Thorough understanding of Bureau Veritas’ Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)

  • Act as Department Lead when Manager, Supervisor or Team Leader are absent

  • Ability to mentor junior staff to effect process changes

  • Assesses problems and recommends solutions

  • Willing to learn and continuously update skills and expertise through training

  • Inspires, motivates and participates in building a strong team environment

  • Uses good judgment, trains and assists in resolution of employee relations issues

  • Excellent manual dexterity, record keeping, calculations and problem solving abilities

  • Flexible to perform varying duties to accommodate changing priorities

  • Accurately follows Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and instructions

  • Detail oriented with accurate record keeping skills

  • Good time-management, communication, multi-tasking and priority setting skills

  • This positionhas limited supervisory responsibility

Work Relationships

  • Internal: Laboratory Operations, Customer Service and Sample Logistics Departments

  • External: Laboratory supplies and equipment vendors (Agilent, Fisher, etc.)

Working Conditions: physical work environment, physical effort, visual and listening attention, and travel

  • High level of work production in fast-paced lab environment. Can involve the repetition of the same process. Requires patience, tenacity and persistence

  • Requires flexible working hours, overtime and shift work

  • Some lifting and carrying (up to 40 lbs.) and may involve long periods of standing

  • Hazardous materials are handled using established safety procedures and appropriate equipment
